The Razorbacks finished the third and final day of the RazorRacket Invitational 3-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles. The Hogs ended the weekend 12-12 overall in individual matchups.

Oklahoma State, Wichita State and Missouri-Kansas City also participated in the invitational.

Arkansas head coach Robert Cox was pleased with the way the team closed out the invitational.

“We finished strong this weekend,” Cox said. “That’s the reason why we were playing this weekend is to get a lot of play for some of these guys. And as the weekend went on we learned a lot of lessons, and it showed here at the end of the day.”

The weekend was a little shaky for the Razorbacks, who finished 3-3 overall on Friday and 4-8 on Saturday. The Hogs played against the UMKC Kangaroos on Sunday in chilly, blustery weather to even out their record by the end of the day.

“I think we went 7-7 in singles here this weekend, which is okay, but we can still do a little bit better,” Cox said. “As the weekend went on, obviously we got a little bit better.”

The clear MVP for the Razorbacks was senior Matt Walters. Walters went a perfect 8-0 in all of his matches this weekend, including four wins in singles and four in doubles.

“To go 8-0, it doesn’t matter what level of tournament it is, where you are in the country. It’s quite an accomplishment,” Cox said. “That’s awesome. But that’s what we expect from a senior and a team captain. He shows a lot of enthusiasm out on the court and he carries his other teammates along with him.”

The other Razorbacks playing this weekend were junior Fess Hall, redshirt senior Taj Harrison and sophomore Michael Nott. The three combined for a 3-9 record in singles play.

The Hogs fared better in the doubles matches, which were moved indoors early Sunday morning because of windy conditions and morning dew.

Arkansas went 5-3 in doubles this weekend after going undefeated in doubles in the Purdue and Midland invitationals earlier this season.

“Our doubles shined again,” Cox said.

Cox also recognized his team cheering on the individual Arkansas players from the stands.

“We saw really good enthusiasm. Even though it wasn’t a team event, we showed team spirit, guys stepped up, and that’s what it’s all about. To finish and go 5-1 on a Sunday, the final day of the tournament, is always good,” Cox said.

Next weekend the Hogs travel to Houston for the Rice Quad, where they will face Tulane, Rice, and LSU.

“We have to amp up a little bit more [next weekend],” Cox said. “But we’ve had two good weekends of play, great practices and we’re healthy. So we’re going to go down there and carry on this momentum that we have from this final Sunday this weekend, and we expect to do well.”
