Gamecocks Shutout Razorbacks

The Razorbacks received their first College World Series loss at the hands of the Gamecocks Thursday night. South Carolina pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Matt Price did not allow a single Razorback run, shutting Arkansas out 2-0.

“Jordan [Montgomery] followed up what Michael [Roth] did earlier today,” said Coach Ray Tanner. “[He] was outstanding. He’s had some good games for us this year, and this was the best one.”

South Carolina’s two runs were earned in the first two innings during Randall Fant’s time on the mound. Fant was replaced by Brandon Moore after one and one-third innings, and Moore pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Moore pitched the most innings of scoreless relief in the College World Series since 1973.

“I was thinking about coming in, throwing strikes, letting the defense work,” Moore said. “I was just taking it pitch by pitch. I wasn’t trying to think I need to go five, six innings.”

The Razorbacks only reached second base safely once against South Carolina in the fifth inning. However, Bo Bigham was tagged out at third base in a close play after Derrick Bleeker singled into left field.

The Razorbacks and Gamecocks will face off again Friday at 8 p.m. in a winner-take-all game to qualify for the championship series against Arizona.

In a postgame press conference Thursday, Coach Dave Van Horn said that he would start DJ Baxendale.
