Feb. 14 snuck up on us yet again, so The Arkansas Traveler took the liberty of making a Valentine’s Day playlist –– filled with the new, the old, the good and the gold.
♥LOVER - TAYLOR SWIFT♥
What would a Valentine’s Day playlist be without an obligatory Taylor Swift tune? It was really hard to narrow it down – the list originally included her entire discography! – but a newer hit was ultimately the move. Blending sultry vocals with soft instrumentals, this ballad will drench you in feels. Go ahead. Take that magnetic force of a man to be your lover.
♥ADORE YOU - HARRY STYLES♥
We get so lost in Harry Styles’s eyes, but that’s neither here nor there. The energy in this love song by Styles is electric. “Adore You” embodies what it feels like to be so madly in love you could explode, and it demands to be sung at the top of your lungs. There are few better ways to spend Valentine’s Day than by watching the “Adore You” music video. Styles find an unlikely friend in a fish that’s growing at an alarming rate (it’s sweeter than it sounds!).
♥FROM EDEN - HOZIER♥
If you’re taking a Valentine’s Day road trip with your sweetheart, this is the song for you. Hozier’s soulful voice matched by a soft background guitar melody begs to be listened to on a wide open road. “From Eden,” off Hozier’s 2014 self-titled album,is a poetic masterpiece in which Hozier sings to a love he feels is more pure and precious than himself. There’s ‘something so magic about (it), don’t you agree’?
♥CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU - FRANKIE VALLI AND THE FOUR SEASONS♥
Every grandmother’s favorite love song from 1967, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is a timeless ballad that could melt even the coldest of hearts. Pour a glass of wine, swoon over Valli’s falsetto and daydream about four men in tuxedos singing their hearts out to you and only you.
♥2/14 - THE BAND CAMINO♥
It’s literally “2/14”… OUR MINDS. This is the perfect Valentine’s track for the heart in denial. Lead vocalist Jeffery Jordan perfectly encapsulates that confusing limbo between platonic and romantic love, crooning about how he “can’t be just friends” but “can’t fall in love tonight.” For your consideration: fall in love tonight anyway.
♥NUMBER ONE FAN - MUNA♥
What’s better than singing a love song for yourself? Not a thing! MUNA, the girl group of your dreams, delivers an indie-pop anthem sure to boost your self-confidence tenfold. Who needs a partner on Valentine’s Day when you can spend the day pampering yourself with a little extra love? Be your own “Number One Fan” today.
♥CRUSH - TESSA VIOLET♥
Upbeat, youthful and as sweet as a candy heart, Tessa Violet’s “Crush” is the perfect song to listen to while you think of that budding romance you’re just beginning to get excited about. Violet perfectly captures that all-consuming, heart-pounding, palm-sweating feeling of new love. So put it on full blast and spend the rest of the day thinking about your ‘crush, crush, crush, crush, crush.’
♥CRUSH - DAVID ARCHULETA♥
Remember that time you fell in love in the sixth grade? So does David Archuleta. This song is the perfect throwback that will remind you how it felt to be overwhelmed by what you thought was love. He lost the seventh season of American Idol to David Cook in 2008 , and that was the real heartbreak. Why was he on iCarly that fateful day in 2009, anyway?
♥CRUSHCRUSHCRUSH - PARAMORE♥
If you’re needing to rage with Hayley Williams this V-Day, we won’t judge. Perhaps, like Williams, you’ve “got a lot to say to” someone, and you’ve got our support. A refreshing break from the mushy, gushy love songs that fill the airwaves every Valentine’s Day, “crushcrushcrush” is a song for anyone who is done with the games and just wants to commit already!
♥FLAPPER GIRL - THE LUMINEERS♥
If you recently cut off all of your hair, and he didn’t flinch, care, stop or even stare, he is not your Valentine. “Flapper Girl,” an oldie but a goodie, will transport you to the ‘20s and have you daydreaming of a Prohibition-era love affair with a traveling businessman. The effect amplifies if you pretend he wrote you this song.
♥COME OUT AND PLAY - BILLIE EILISH♥
Reminiscent of fresh coffee and clean sheets, this track will keep you cozy on a cold night. Eilish hugs you tight in “come out and play,” begging you softly to stay a while and assuring you that you have nothing to be insecure about. Beware: if you play this in the car on a first date, you’ll be in a relationship by the end of the three-and-a-half minutes. Eilish recently took home four titles at the 2020 Grammy Awards, including best new artist and album, record and song of the year.
♥LOVE - LANA DEL REY♥
Lana Del Rey really did something on “Love,” a sonic manifestation of that floaty feeling you get when you’re sitting close to someone and think, “Wow, I’d like to be permanently affixed here, I’m thinking.” Adrip with dizzying passion, this track will leave you feeling lightheaded in the best way. Pro tip: slow dance to it.
♥LOVING IS EASY - REX ORANGE COUNTY♥
This Rex Orange County favorite is the perfect lo-fi love song. Love doesn’t always strike in the perfect moment, but there’s something so satisfying about when it does. Alexander O’Connor sings about that serendipitous moment when things fall perfectly into place and love feels so, well, easy. Listen to this song enough and you might just manifest your own perfect love this V-Day.
♥A LOVE THAT WILL LAST - RENEE OLSTEAD♥
Just like Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia, we’re all just looking for someone to see us when we feel invisible. Renee Olstead’s ballad from “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” (2004) is a song for those hoping to find their forever love. Olstead rejects the complicated, messy, dramatic parts of falling in love, only wanting something strong and unyielding. Whether you’ve found your “love that will last” or you’re just a hopeless romantic, this song is sure to stick with you for Valentine’s Days to come.
