As of 1 a.m. Wednesday, Joe Biden leads the U.S. presidential race with 224 electoral votes called or projected for the former vice president. President Donald Trump has earned 213 electoral votes.
Election experts estimate that due to record numbers of early and absentee votes cast, some counties and states could take more than a week to report final vote counts.
Biden was a U.S. senator from 1973-2009 and served as vice president to former President Barack Obama from 2009-2017. His platform includes restoring environmental protections repealed by Trump, expanding access to healthcare and promoting international cooperation.
