UA student and Miss Arkansas was crowned Miss America 2017 today.
Savvy Shields, a senior art major at the UofA and a Fayetteville native, won both Teen and Miss Arkansas on her first try, according to an article released by The Arkansas Traveler Aug. 17.
The Miss America Organization announced her coronation live and on Twitter around 10:30 p.m. as Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell crowned Shields.
Shields competed in the talent phase with her signature jazz dance routine and then fielded a question from Olympian Gabby Douglas concerning presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Shields is the first UA student to win Miss America since Donna Axum won the title in 1964, and the first Miss Arkansas to win the title since Elizabeth Ward won in 1982, according to the organization’s website.
