A male suspect and an FPD officer are dead following a shooting on the Fayetteville Downtown Square on Saturday night, Fayetteville Police Department Capt. Mike Reynolds said.

The suspect shot the officer in the back alley south of the police department on Rock Street. It is unknown whether the suspect shot himself or was shot by the officer, Reynolds said.

“It appears that the suspect came into the back parking lot and executed my officer,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said the officer was waiting for his partner when he was shot.

FPD officers responded to the shooting, which lasted about 15 seconds, at 9:40 p.m.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office will work with the FBI on an internal investigation, Reynolds said.

Officials will not release the names of the officer or the suspect, Reynolds said.
