The Razorback men’s and women’s tennis teams competed at the International Tennis Association’s National Fall Championships between Thursday and Sunday, closing out the men’s fall season.
Sophomore Aleks Bucan opened with a comfortable first round victory over Columbia’s Alex Kotzen in two sets, 7-5 and 7-6. Bucan moved on to face No. 8 seed JJ Tracy of Ohio State in the round of 16 Friday, eventually falling to the Buckeye in 6-0 and 6-1 sets.
Freshman Oscar Pinto Sansano and sophomore Riccardo Trione faced Stanford’s No. 4 seed duo of Arthur Fery and Alexandre Rotsaert, falling 6-0 and 7-5 in the first round of men’s doubles.
Razorback sophomore duo Melvin Manuel and Adrien Burdet faced the No. 1 seed, Ohio State’s Matej Vocel and Robert Cash, falling behind early and eventually losing, 6-2 and 6-4.
Following their losses, both Arkansas duos transitioned to the consolation bracket, in which
Manuel and Burdet took down Georgia State’s Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte in two close sets, 5-7 and 6-2 (11-9). Trione and Pinto Sansano were also victorious in their first consolation match, claiming a victory over Gonzaga’s Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth, 6-0 and 7-5.
Trione and Pinto Sansano advanced to face LSU Tigers Vlad Lobak and Gabriel Diaz Freire, while Manuel and Burdet took on Dario Huber and Victor Moreno Lozano of Nebraska. The Cornhusker duo forced a super tiebreaker against Manuel and Burdet after two sets, 7-6 and 5-7, eventually falling 10-5 to the Razorback tandem, who then advanced to the consolation semifinals. Trione and Pinto Sansano fell to the Tigers, 6-3 and 6-2. In the consolation semifinals, Manuel and Burdet fell to Franco Aubone and Benjamin Hannestad of Miami, 7-5 and 6-3.
Graduate student Tatum Rice and sophomore Morgan Cross faced Stanford’s Niluka Madurawe and Alexandra Yepifanova in the opening round of 32 in the women’s ITA Fall Championships. Rice and Cross took the first set in a 6-3 decision, and defeated the Stanford duo in the second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (5-3) advance to the round of 16.
The Razorback pairing took on Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Yulia Starodubtseva, the No. 57 seed Old Dominion duo, on Friday. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Rice and Cross fought back in the second to force a tiebreaker, but eventually fell 6-7 (11-9). The loss put the duo’s record at 10-3 in fall play.
The ITA Fall Championships marked the end of the tennis season for the men’s team until the spring. The women’s team will close out the fall portion of their season Friday in College Station at the Texas A&M Fall Invitational, which will be broadcast on www.12thman.com.
