The Arkansas women’s basketball team opened its season in winning style at Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday, running away with an 85-33 win over Tarleton State.

Arkansas’ defensive prowess was on full display as the Hogs held the Texans to just eight points in each of the first two quarters and forced 13 first-half turnovers.

“I thought we got them off their spots,” Arkansas head coach Mike Neighbors said. “Our kids have taken some pride in getting stops and securing rebounds.”

The Razorbacks struggled out of the gate, going just 1-of-8 from the field to start the game. Down 4-3 early, Arkansas went on a 14-0 run to open the lead to 17-4 in the late stages of the first quarter. At the end of the opening quarter, the Hogs enjoyed a 20-8 advantage.

“Yesterday in our scouting practice, it was one of our best practices,” junior Makayla Daniels said following the game. “We didn’t care who got the basket, we just wanted to win.”

On a night during which they struggled shooting the ball, the Razorbacks took advantage of a plethora of Tarleton miscues, pushing their lead to 25 points with two minutes to play in the first half. As the two teams went into the locker room at halftime, Arkansas led 41-16.

The Texans continued their poor play in the second half, scoring just five points in the third period. The Hogs used that and the strong play of Daniels — who led all scorers with 15 — freshman Samara Spencer and redshirt freshman Elauna Eaton to power themselves to a 68-21 advantage heading into the final quarter.

“Fearless,” Neighbors said of Spencer’s performance. “She came in ready to go.”

Eaton was impressive in the third quarter, scoring her first official points as a Razorback — eight in the quarter and 11 in the game.

It was more of the same in the fourth as Arkansas pushed its lead to 50 points with just over two minutes to play in the ballgame. As the final buzzer sounded, the Razorbacks secured an impressive 85-33 season-opening victory.

The Razorbacks will take on the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at noon Friday inside Bud Walton Arena. The game will be streamed on the SEC Network+.
