The Arkansas men’s golf team had a strong outing during the Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, California. The Hogs placed third overall in the eight-team tournament, shooting 13-under-par, or 1067 as a team.

The trip to Pebble Beach was highlighted by an individual third-place finish by senior Mateo Fernández de Oliveira. The senior duo of Julián Périco and Segundo Oliva Pinto tied for the best single-day score throughout the weekend Sunday, with a 5-under-par 67.

In the first round of play, Arkansas got off to a good start, but started to drift downhill on the back nine. Luckily, the heroics of junior Wil Gibson, who shot 30 (6-under-par) on the final nine holes, came in clutch for the Hogs.

“I really just got in a groove and never got ahead of myself,” Gibson said in an interview with Razorback Athletics. “I felt really comfortable out there on the back nine today compared to the front. I was in a good place mentally even after making early mistakes. Pebble Beach is such a special place with the best views so it’s hard not to enjoy a round out here.”

The Razorbacks ended up finishing fifth on day one, shooting 2-under-par as a team.

Day two was not kind to the Hogs. Shooting a 6-over-par 366 as a team, the Razorbacks fell to the sixth spot on the leaderboard for day two alone. Overall, the Hogs were in sixth place coming out of day two, needing heroics from everyone on the team on the final day of competition.

Arkansas delivered on day three with a magnificent showing. The Hogs ended day three atop the leaderboard and topped every other team for the best single day of golf in the tournament.

The Razorbacks shot an outstanding 17-under-par led by Périco and Pinto, who both shot 3-under-par, and graduate senior Luke Long who shot 2-under-par.

“This was a great way to open the season,” head coach Brad McMakin said. “It was a great team effort from all six players. I was really proud of each and everyone of them this week.”

All in all, the 19th-ranked Razorbacks had a great showing for the first outing of the season. Next up on the schedule, the Hogs will be playing October 4-6 in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville.
